According to the consumer watchdog Which, the selling of fake reviews is becoming systematic. It is calling on the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to take urgent action and put an end to those sites who are deliberately breaking consumer law.
The new laws that should be in place across Europe by May 2022, will give consumers a fighting chance. According to Dutch News NL ‘The new law will make it obligatory to make sure that reviews are checked for authenticity before they are published, while paid-for, ‘fake reviews’ will be prohibited by law and subject to fines.’
A company paid a third party to write and post fake reviews according to the FTC. The company, Cure Encapsulations, Inc, and its owner, Naftula Jacobowitz sold capsules on Amazon.com as an appetite-suppressing, fat-blocking, weight-loss pill.
